Don's favourite, not only in New Zealand but in nearly all the world, is Fiordland and Milford Sound on the South Island. This small section of New Zealand has a wide range of spectacular scenery. Most of the amazing scenery can be taken in on the 119km drive from Te Anau to Milford Sound where you will experience everything from grassy meadows to beech forests all with alpine peaks looming in the background. Upon arriving in Milford, you have been rather suddenly transferred to a rain forest environment (avg rainfall of 6m/ year - approx 24 feet).
Angela's favourite place thus far has to be a tie between two beach locations: Piha Beach on the North Island and Little Kaiteriteri beach on the South Island. Piha has great swimming and a beautiful location right on the west coast of the North Island. Surfers find great waves there too, and one can definitely soak up enough sun to get a scorching sunburn (at least that was my experience).
Kaiteri (for short) is becoming very well-to-do with monstrous, ghastly houses and lots of boats and water skiing, but you can't beat the green, warm water.
