Guidebook and map recommendations

When we were making our plans to come here on holiday in January 2005, there pretty much was only one guidebook, The Lonely Planet Guide to New Zealand. Since then a few other guidebooks have cropped up, probably because of the Lord of the Rings and the increase in tourism to the country, but they haven't really stacked up to the Lonely Planet guide in our opinion. And, frankly, in many people's opinions if you take a look at the only book we ever see in the hands of Nelson's tourists: Lonely Planet. It's in bookstores everywhere and one might even call it New Zealand's travel bible.

Wait to get a map of the country until you arrive, the best ones we have found are the KIWI Maps, which you can get in all sorts of varieties from cities, regions, and the entire country; from driving maps to CBD maps.
